Random reflections on relationships

Because I am a sucker for fun memes…
Rules: Randomly list 9 people, preferably people you know. Do not read the questions below the list until you create your list. After your list of 9 people is complete, go back and answer each question, referencing your list.

Microlending and the Nobel Peace Prize

Long time readers will remember that I’m a big fan of microlending, so you won’t be surprised when I say I’m excited about this news: Muhammad Yunus (who Tom Peters calls “the father of microlending”) has just been declared the winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

The benefits of a clean desk

It’s all fine and good to clean your desk, but what difference does it make?
Well, for one, it makes room for one of the really important activities of life—wrestling.

It also makes compact office supplies more accessible.

A tribute to Lynette D. Vosges

Lynette Vosges was one of the thousands of victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. She was at work that day, at Aon Corporation, where she was senior vice president of reinsurance. While I couldn’t find a lot of facts about Lynette (I know she was 48, in the World Trade Center, and [...]

Tackle It Tuesday: a letter to Uwitonze Sarah

I heard about Tackle It Tuesday last week from Jessica Duquette and immediately liked the idea. Anyone who knows me well knows I like short-attention-span projects, and certainly that my house (and probably whole life) could use a little focused energy.
My first week’s project, though, isn’t specifically related to physical housekeeping. This is [...]

Apologies (and how we make them meaningless)

Early to Rise had a good article the other day called “I’m Sorry, but…” (scroll down to the main article).
I can certainly recognize in myself the tendency to do what Search for Significance (and everyone else) calls “The Blame Game.” Often I forget that the point of an apology is to be sincere and [...]

Mission statement, round one

Thanks to a little friendly prodding, I finally sat down and wrote a first draft of my personal mission statement.
Because I am a nerd and like frameworks, I decided to go role-by-role and state (in the present tense) something I have, something I am, and something I do for each of them (this is particularly [...]

Are you ready to shake things up?

I regularly read Jessica Duquette’s blog, “It’s not about your stuff!” Jessica is a professional organizer and frequently shares tips about getting rid of clutter, general organizing, etc. (all of which I need!). But sometimes she writes something that is even more broadly applicable.
I present to you, “How do you know when it’s time [...]

Sarah, the over-extended (and over-obsessive) non-fiction reader

I have a bad habit. (Actually, I have loads of them, but I’m just going to tell you about one right now. Don’t want you feeling overwhelmed.)
Lately I’ve been reading mostly non-fiction. However, if you look at the sidebar section entitled “I Just Finished”, you’ll see that I’m not actually finishing non-fiction [...]

Four questions

Sometimes I leave myself random notes. I have had this draft post sitting around since January, and I like it, but I have no recollection of where it came from. I have the following note:
Focal Point: A Proven System to Simplify Your Life, Double Your Productivity, and Achieve All Your Goals (Hardcover)
by Brian [...]
